The Price of Keeping the Peace - A Libra New Moon Examination

The New Moon arrives at 17° Libra on October 10, offering what may initially seem like a surprisingly quiet beginning.
The Sun and Moon aren’t receiving any particularly strong aspects at the moment of their conjunction. We could easily look at that and assume this lunation is offering us a peaceful little Libra reset: a chance to restore harmony, smooth things over, and move forward.
But underneath that seemingly peaceful surface, Venus is retrograde in Scorpio and she rules this New Moon.
Venus has recently met Mercury in Scorpio and is now locked in a square with Mars in Leo, creating an emotional undercurrent around relationships, values, fairness, validation, desire, and the things we may have been reluctant to say aloud. What appears peaceful on the surface may be considerably more complicated underneath.
Libra wants peace, but peace and avoidance are not the same thing.
This New Moon brings new information, and Libra asks us to place that information upon the scales.
This may not be the kind of New Moon that dramatically announces itself as a new chapter, but it may be a quieter, resolute turning point.

Astrology Takeaways for the Libra New Moon
New Moon at 17° Libra: recalibration. Libra asks us to examine fairness, justice, relationships, peace, beauty, and compromise. Instead of seeking perfect equality at all times, consider where thoughtful adjustments could improve life.
Venus Retrograde in Scorpio: look beneath the surface. Venus asks us to reconsider what, and whom, we value and whether our investments of time, money, energy, and affection still reflect what matters. Scorpio makes this deeply emotional and psychologically revealing.
Venus separating from Mercury in Scorpio: say what’s been hiding underneath. Mercury’s recent conjunction with Venus may help us express feelings, desires, resentments, values, or truths we’ve struggled to articulate. As Mercury prepares to retrograde through Scorpio later this month, this conversation may be only the beginning
Venus square Mars in Leo: What do you value, and what do you want to be valued for? Tension between Venus and Mars can create conflict in relationships or within ourselves. Mars in Leo may highlight our need for recognition, pride, performance, creativity, and applause. Are your actions aligned with your values, or are you seeking outside proof?
Moon’s opposition to Saturn in Aries: You may not get what you want when you want it. Saturn reminds us worthwhile things take time. Obstacles don’t always mean you’re on the wrong path, but you can't ignore every limitation. Ask whether the challenge calls for patience, perseverance, compromise, or an honest change of course.

Mother’s Mirror: The Roles We Outlive

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the roles we play in other people’s lives.
Not the roles we choose for ourselves, but the versions of us that other people have come to expect.
The helpful one.
The agreeable one.
The enthusiastic young one.
The student.
The assistant.
The peacekeeper.
The person who always shows up.
The person who will carry more than her share.
The person who won’t make it difficult.
Sometimes, these roles begin honestly. They may even have been exactly who we were when a relationship began.
But then… inevitably… we change.
Motherhood has made this especially impossible for me to ignore. I am simply not the woman I was before becoming a mother. I’ve been stretched, broken open, humbled, strengthened, and remade too many times to fit neatly back inside some of the identities I once occupied.

And yet, I’ve realized how much energy I can still spend auditioning for roles I’ve already outgrown.
Trying to demonstrate that I’m worthy of being taken seriously.
Trying to earn recognition I’ve already earned.
Trying to remain useful enough to justify my place in someone’s life.
Trying to preserve a relationship by continuing to perform the version of myself that makes the relationship work.
This New Moon in Libra has me questioning whether that’s actually “peace”.

Peace and compliance are not the same thing.
A moment in the Þrymskviða has been with me since I gave my astrology talk at our Mabon Ritual. Thor’s hammer has been stolen, and the proposed solution is to marry Freyja off to the giant Þrymr in exchange for its return.
Freyja’s answer is emphatically: No.
Her refusal creates a problem. It inconveniences everyone. Someone now has to find another solution.
But she holds firm: No. I am not yours to bargain with.
Something about a woman refusing to sacrifice herself simply because doing so would make everything easier for everyone else feels incredibly powerful to me.
Libra doesn't ask us to maintain every relationship at any cost.
Sometimes justice means acknowledging that the arrangement itself is no longer equitable.
Saturn in Aries asks us whether we hold enough sovereignty to tolerate what happens when we stop cooperating with an identity that no longer belongs to us.

Walking away doesn’t have to mean burning the bridge. I don’t have to condemn someone because they’ve misunderstood me, or punish someone because they still see an older version of me.
I don’t even have to convince them that I’ve changed.
I can love someone and recognize that the role I occupied in their life no longer fits.
I can appreciate what a relationship once gave me without requiring it to become something it isn’t.
I can say no without making someone else the villain.
Venus retrograde in Scorpio asks us to look beneath the pleasant surface of our relationships and examine what they’re actually built on.
With Venus having just met Mercury there, some uncomfortable truths may finally have language.
As Venus squares Mars in Leo, self-worth becomes something we have to act from, rather than something we wait for another person to confirm.

I’ve been sitting with one question in particular:
Where am I still auditioning for a role I’ve already outgrown?
And underneath that:
What am I afraid I will lose if I stop performing it?
Approval? Belonging? Community? Peace? Someone’s image of me?
There will probably be grief in discovering the answer.
Sometimes becoming more fully ourselves means discovering that certain relationships worked because we were willing to be smaller inside them.
But I’m going to try to stop auditioning.
Let people have their version of me.
Misunderstand, be disappointed, and let old roles remain vacant.
Freyja didn’t need to destroy Þrymr’s hall herself. She didn’t need to prove that she was powerful enough to refuse him.
She simply refused.
And maybe that is enough.
Blue Hour Meditation: Adjusting the Scales
For this Libra New Moon, our exclusive BLUEHOUR meditation invites you to stand before a symbolic set of scales and bring forward one area of your life that currently feels out of balance.

What has been receiving too much of you?
What are you carrying that isn’t actually yours?
What truth have you been avoiding in order to keep the peace?
What would a fair compromise look like here?
I wanted to create an opportunity to recognize what the next honest adjustment in our lives might be.
This meditation was designed to return to whenever something in your life feels uneven, knowing the scales will inevitably shift again.
And when they do, you are allowed to recalibrate.
Along with the meditation, BLUEHOUR subscribers also receive this month’s collective tarot reflection and other seasonal offerings designed to accompany you through the lunar cycle.
My Wish for You
May this Libra New Moon grant you the courage to seek peace without requiring yourself to pretend that everything is peaceful.
May Venus reveal what you truly value beneath the roles you perform, the approval you seek, and the expectations you’ve inherited.
May you speak what needs to be spoken without confusing honesty for cruelty or silence for kindness.

May you know when an obstacle is asking you to wait… and when it is asking you to change.
May you remember that compromise does not require self-abandonment.
May you invest your precious time, energy, love, and attention into what you genuinely value, not merely what promises to validate you in return.
From my altar to yours,
🌙 Cawnawyn Mor
